Gas Line Safety in New Hampshire: What Every Homeowner Must Know

By Plumbing HVAC Services NH | July 18, 2024 | 7 min read

Licensed gas line inspection in New Hampshire home

Natural gas and propane power thousands of New Hampshire homes — heating systems, water heaters, stoves, and dryers. When gas systems function properly, they're safe and efficient. But gas leaks and faulty gas lines are among the most serious safety hazards a homeowner can face. This guide gives every NH homeowner the knowledge they need to stay safe.

Warning Signs of a Gas Leak in Your NH Home

The Smell of Rotten Eggs or Sulfur

Natural gas is odorless in its natural state, but utility companies add mercaptan — a chemical that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur — specifically so you can detect leaks. If you smell this odor anywhere in your home, treat it as a gas leak immediately. Don't investigate, don't flip switches, don't try to find the source. Leave the building.

Hissing or Whistling Near Gas Lines or Appliances

A hissing sound near your gas meter, along gas pipes, or at appliance connections indicates gas escaping through a crack or loose fitting. This is an emergency — evacuate and call your gas utility from outside the building.

Dead or Dying Vegetation in a Specific Area

An underground gas leak can kill plants in a specific area of your yard even during growing season. An unusual patch of dead grass or wilting plants in a linear pattern near where your gas line runs from the street to your home is a warning sign worth investigating with your gas utility.

Bubbling in Wet Areas

Gas escaping from underground can cause bubbling in puddles, streams, or wet soil near your home's gas supply line. This is a rare but serious indicator of an underground leak.

Physical Symptoms

Prolonged low-level gas exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and difficulty breathing — sometimes mistaken for flu symptoms. If multiple household members experience these symptoms simultaneously, especially improving when outside, take it seriously.

What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

Do NOT: flip any light switches, use any electrical devices, smoke or use an open flame, use your landline phone inside the building, or try to locate or fix the leak yourself.

DO: Leave the building immediately with all occupants and pets. Leave the door open as you exit. Once safely outside and away from the building, call 911 and your gas utility emergency line. Call our emergency line at (603) 555-0100 once you are safely away from the building.

Do not re-enter the building until your gas utility has inspected and cleared it as safe.

Common Causes of Gas Line Problems in NH Homes

Corroded or aging gas pipes (particularly in NH homes built before 1980), improper amateur installations or repairs, earthquake or ground movement (even the minor frost-heave events common in NH), accidental damage during digging or construction, and faulty appliance connectors are the most common causes we see across New Hampshire.

Gas Line Work Requires a Licensed NH Plumber

In New Hampshire, gas line installation, modification, and repair must be performed by a licensed plumber with gas fitting certification. This is not optional — it's state law, and for good reason. Gas work performed without proper licensing is illegal, will fail inspection, and voids homeowner's insurance.

Never allow unlicensed contractors to work on gas lines in your NH home, regardless of the cost savings offered. The risk to your family's safety is not worth it.

Annual Gas Safety Inspection

We recommend annual gas line inspections for all NH homes using natural gas or propane, particularly homes over 20 years old. Our licensed gas fitters pressure-test your entire system, inspect all fittings and connections, check appliance connections, and verify proper venting — giving you complete peace of mind heading into NH's long heating season.

Gas Line Installation for New Appliances

Adding a gas stove, gas dryer, outdoor grill line, generator connection, or gas fireplace? All of these require a licensed NH plumber to install the gas supply line and make the final connections. We handle all permits and inspections, ensuring your new appliance is connected safely and code-compliantly.
